An Advocate—Jesus Our Intercessor

1 John 2:1–2

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

═══ OPORD ═══

WHO: Jesus as advocate (defense attorney); believers as the defended; God as the One Who must be satisfied.

WHAT: Christ’s intercession on behalf of sinning believers; His righteousness justifies us before God.

WHERE: In the presence of God where Christ represents believers, maintaining relationship despite failure.

WHEN: Christ’s work of justification was completed; His intercession continues; it promises final reconciliation.

HOW: Justification is secure because Christ advocates for us; sanctification continues as we live under His protection; glorification is assured through His eternal intercession.

Sin does not sever our relationship with God because Christ continuously intercedes for us. He does not excuse our sin but defends our case based on His righteousness. In justification, Christ’s sacrifice paid the penalty. In sanctification, His intercession protects us when we stumble. In glorification, His work will be complete—we will never sin again.

═══ PRAYER ═══

Jesus, thank You for advocating for me before the Father. Help me live in gratitude for Your intercession, not as an excuse for sin, but as a reason to pursue holiness.

═══ DAILY CHALLENGES ═══

  1. When tempted to sin today, pause and remember that Christ intercedes for you, then choose obedience as a response to His grace.
  2. Thank Jesus specifically for His intercession on behalf of a recent failure in your life, allowing His forgiveness to transform your guilt into gratitude.
