Salvation Tense: Sanctification (Present Tense)
2 Peter 1:12–15 — “Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them, and are established in the present truth. I think it right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you; knowing that the putting off of my tent comes swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. Yes, I will make every effort that you may always be able to remember these things even after my departure.”
═══ OPORD ═══
WHO: Peter — an aging apostle facing death. He calls his body a “tent” (skenoma — a temporary dwelling), acknowledging that his earthly mission is ending. He writes to believers who already know the truth but need constant reminding.
WHAT: Peter’s final mission is repetition with urgency. He knows they know the truth — but he also knows they will forget without reminders. This is the essence of discipleship: teaching what is known, reinforcing what is established, and stirring up what has grown comfortable. Sanctification requires ongoing reminders because the flesh is forgetful and the enemy relentless.
WHERE: From a Roman prison (tradition holds), writing to scattered churches. His tent is about to be folded — but his words will endure.
WHEN: In the final chapter of Peter’s life. Jesus Himself told Peter how he would die (John 21:18–19). Peter writes with the urgency of a man on his last mission.
WHY: Because truth not remembered is truth not applied. You can know the Bible and still fail to live it. Peter’s remedy: constant, deliberate reminding. This devotional series is doing exactly what Peter commanded — stirring you up by reminding you of what you already know.
═══ PRAYER ═══
Lord, thank You for Peter’s faithfulness to the very end. He did not retire from ministry — he pressed on until his tent was folded. Stir me up today. Remind me of what I know but have neglected to practice. Let me not grow comfortable in truth I do not apply. And give me Peter’s urgency — my tent is temporary too. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
