Do Not Love the World

1 John 2:15–17

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

═══ OPORD ═══

WHO: Believers tempted by worldly systems; God (alternative source of satisfaction); the world system (anti-God system).

WHAT: A call to distinguish between love of God and love of the world’s value system.

WHERE: Within culture and society where competing loyalties demand attention and devotion.

WHEN: An ongoing tension; the world will pass away but those who do God’s will remain forever.

HOW: Justification frees us from enslavement to the world; sanctification is resisting worldly values daily; glorification is liberation when the world is gone.

John contrasts permanence with temporality. The world and its desires pass away; God and His will remain forever. To love the world’s system is to love what is perishing and to turn from what lasts. Justification declares us free from the world’s hold. Sanctification practices that freedom by choosing God’s values. Glorification will fully reveal how wise that choice was.

═══ PRAYER ═══

Father, help me see through the attractiveness of worldly values to their emptiness. Realign my loves so that I cherish what is eternal and real—You.
